Not all USB sticks are created equal—and some are outright scams.
Some manufacturers take a small-capacity USB stick—say 8GB—and reprogram it to appear as a larger one, like 16GB or even 64GB. When you plug it into your computer, it looks fine. You can copy files, save data, and everything seems to work… at first.
The trouble begins when you start filling it past its true capacity. Everything past the actual size (e.g., beyond 8GB on a fake 16GB stick) gets silently corrupted or lost. By the time you notice, it’s too late: your files are gone, and the stick is long past the return window. You may not even remember where you bought it.
Even without deceptive reprogramming, some USB sticks are simply poor quality. They can have bad sectors, unstable controllers, or unreliable solder joints—all of which can lead to data corruption, slow transfers, and drive failure.
For critical data—like photos, documents, or embroidery designs—a bad USB stick can mean real losses. If you’re using the stick to transfer files to an embroidery machine, a corrupted design file might waste materials or damage your project.
